SHOOTING: Narang smashes world record:Hyderabad marksman Gagan Narang became the first Indian to smash the world record in the precision sport on way to clinchng the 10 m air rifle gold in the ISSF World Cup final at
Bangkok. The only Indian entrant in the prestigious event, Narang established the world record with a score of 703.5, thus eclipsing the mark of 703.1 set by Australia’s Thomas Farnik in 2006.

World Championship, 2008: Viswanathan Anand mixed aggression with caution to retain the World Championship title by defeating Russian Vladimir Kramnik. The championship was held in Bonn, Germany. This was the third World Championship title for Anand, who had earlier bagged the title in 2000 at Delhi, and then regained it in 2007 at Mexico.

India-Australia Test Series: India beat Australia by 172 runs to win the fourth and final Test and regain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in Nagpur. Australia, chasing a record 382 for victory, were dismissed for 209 in 50.2 overs,handing India a 2-0 series triumph. GAMES
Commonwealth Youth Games: President Pratibha Patil declared the third Commonwealth Youth Games open on October 12, 2008, at Pune, as splendid firework lit up the sky. Hosts India pulled of a major upset by topping the standings with a rich haul of 76 medals. Australia finished on the second spot while England secured the third spot.

World Junior Title for Saina: Saina Nehwal became the first Indian to win the world junior badminton title, beating Japans Sayako Sato in the final in Pune.
BOXING
Youth World Championship: Thokchom Nanao Singh continued his blazing form to clinch the gold at the inaugural AIBA Youth World Boxing championship in Guadalajara, Mexico. The army boxer ended up being Indias lone medallist. Cuba topped the medal tally. Russia was a distant second.
