The Booker Prize

The Booker Prize is a literary prize awarded each year for the best original full-length novel, written in the English language, by a citizen of either the Commonwealth of Nations or Ireland.

The prize was originally known as the Booker-McConnell Prize after the company Booker-McConnell began sponsoring the event in 1968, and became commonly known as the “Booker Prize” or simply “the Booker”. When administration of the prize was transferred to the Booker Prize Foundation in 2002, the title sponsor became the investment company Man Group, which opted to retain “Booker” as part of the official title of the prize. The prize money awarded with the Booker Prize was originally £21,000, and was subsequently raised to £50,000 in 2002 under the sponsorship of the Man Group.

Indian Olympics Association

In 1927 Indian Olympics Association was formed. Dorabji Tata was the first president and Dr A C Northern of Young Men’s Christian Association, Madras was the secretary. Official representation was made by India in 1928 at Amsterdam Olympics. At Amsterdam Indian Hockey Team participated and won the Gold Medal under the captaincy of Jaipal Singh. India never allowed others to won the gold medal in hockey from 1928 to 1956.

The Yashoda Scheme

With the inspiration of Yashoda in Mahabharata who cared and brought up lord Krishna, the Central Government with the help of Norway (Norway India Partnership Initiative (NIPI)) has launched “Yashoda Scheme” at Sambalpur for the first time in country.

NIPI wouldl contribute Rs.1.5 core for Orissa for implementation of the scheme. The Scheme was launched in the country after the success of ‘Janani Surakshya Yojana with an objective to bring a change in the post natal care.

Under the schemes the ”Yoshodas” would be recruited to look after the ”Bal Krishnas” on a monthly honorium of Rs 3000. Yashodas” would stay in hospitals for 48 hours and take care of the new born children. The ‘Yashodas’ would also look after the mothers of the new born children. Jharsuguda and Angul will be covered under the scheme very shortly.

Arjun Atwal became the first Indian to win on the PGA Tour

Arjun Atwal became the first Indian and just the sixth Asian-born player to win on the PGA Tour when he secured a one-stroke victory at the Wyndham Championship on Sunday.

Atwal joined Japanese trio Isao Aoki, Shigeki Maruyama and Ryuji Imada and South Koreans K.J. Choi and Y.E. Yang in an elite but growing club of champions from world’s most populous continent.

Arjun Atwal becomes first Indian to win on PGA Tour

The 37-year-old, who now lives in Florida, sank a pressure-packed seven-foot par putt at the final hole to edge American David Toms at Sedgefield.

His final round of 67 left him on 20-under 260, ignited by an opening day 61. Toms closed with a 64.

Jimena Navarrete-The Miss Universe 2010

Jimena Navarrete, a 22-year-old brunette from Mexico, was named Miss Universe in Las Vegas on Monday.

The first runner-up was Miss Jamaica, Yendi Phillipps, while Miss Australia, Jesinta Campbell, was second runner-up.

Mexican woman wins Miss Universe contest

Navarrete, a nature enthusiast from Guadalajara, defeated favorites from Ireland, the Philippines and Venezuela to become the 59th winner of the crown in a show broadcast live around the world.

She received the crown from reigning Miss Universe Stefania Fernandez, Venezuela’s second winner in as many years. In a major shock, this year’s Miss Venezuela failed to make it past the first cut, when the 83 contestants were whittled down to 15. Miss USA, another favored contender, was also eliminated at the outset.
