New Delhi: India, Germany review security situation in Pak, Afghanistan; Iran denies Merkel’s plane overflight rights enroute to India

India, Germany discuss Pak, sign four agreements

Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Angela Merkel (L) shakes hands with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during a meeting in New Delhi on May 31, 2011. Merkel is in India for a one-day visit during which she will receive Jawaharlal Nehru Prize for International Understanding 2009 from Indian President Pratibha Patil. AFP

India and Germany today reviewed the security situation in Pakistan and Afghanistan with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asserting that terrorism will have to be fought “on all fronts and not selectively”.

Singh and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who arrived here this morning, held wide-ranging talks on bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest. “We discussed the developments in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Terrorism is a serious challenge which will have to be fought on all fronts and not selectively,” Singh told a joint press conference with Merkel after the talks.

After the talks, India and Germany signed four agreements for cooperation in vocational education, medical research, science and technology and nuclear physics.

Asked about the use of nuclear energy, Singh said every effort would be made to ensure that all safety norms and generation and utilisation of nuclear energy are world class.

“Today our nuclear energy is three per cent of our total energy generation. Our capacity is less than 5,000 MW. We want to raise it to 20,000 MW by the year 2020,” Singh said.

He said if India has to meet the emission targets, the country will need a combination of nuclear energy and renewable energy sources. On the selection of a new IMF chief, the Prime Minister said he did not discuss the issue with Merkel but favoured “the best available” person regardless of nationality.

Wikipedia-All about Wikipedia

Wikipedia is a multilingual, web-based, free-content encyclopedia project based on an openly editable model. The name “Wikipedia” is a portmanteau of the words wiki (a technology for creating collaborative websites, from the Hawaiian word wiki, meaning “quick”) and encyclopedia. Wikipedia’s articles provide links to guide the user to related pages with additional information.

Wikipedia is written collaboratively by largely anonymous Internet volunteers who write without pay. Anyone with Internet access can write and make changes to Wikipedia articles (except in certain cases where editing is restricted to prevent disruption or vandalism). Users can contribute anonymously, under a pseudonym, or with their real identity, if they choose.

The fundamental principles by which Wikipedia operates are the Five pillars. The Wikipedia community has developed many policies and guidelines to improve the encyclopedia; however, it is not a formal requirement to be familiar with them before contributing.

Since its creation in 2001, Wikipedia has grown rapidly into one of the largest reference websites, attracting 400 million unique visitors monthly as of March 2011 according to ComScore. There are more than 91,000 active contributors working on more than 17,000,000 articles in more than 270 languages. As of today, there are 3,647,139 articles in English. Every day, hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world collectively make tens of thousands of edits and create thousands of new articles to augment the knowledge held by the Wikipedia encyclopedia.

Wikipedia history

Wikipedia was founded as an offshoot of Nupedia, a now-abandoned project to produce a free encyclopedia. Nupedia had an elaborate system of peer review and required highly qualified contributors, but the writing of articles was slow. During 2000, Jimmy Wales, founder of Nupedia, and Larry Sanger, whom Wales had employed to work on the project, discussed ways of supplementing Nupedia with a more open, complementary project. Multiple sources suggested the idea that a wiki might allow members of the public to contribute material, and Nupedia’s first wiki went online on January 10, 2001.

Gold is a chemical element with the symbol Au and an atomic number of 79. Gold is a dense, soft, shiny metal and the most malleable and ductile metal known. Pure gold has a bright yellow color and luster traditionally considered attractive, which it maintains without oxidizing in air or water. Chemically, gold is a transition metal and a group 11 element. With exception of the noble gases, gold is the least reactive chemical element known. It has been a valuable and highly sought-after precious metal for coinage, jewelry, and other arts since long before the beginning of recorded history.

Gold resists attacks by individual acids, but it can be dissolved by the aqua regia, so named because it dissolves gold. Gold also dissolves in alkaline solutions of cyanide, which have been used in mining. Gold dissolves in mercury, forming amalgam alloys. Gold is insoluble in nitric acid, which dissolves silver and base metals, a property that has long been used to confirm the presence of gold in items.

The ISO 4217 currency code of gold is XAU.
