London 2012 Olympic Games

Posted on 31 July 2012 by admin

Day 5 of 17

The 2012 Summer Olympic Games, officially the Games of the XXX Olympiad, also known informally as London 2012, began in London, United Kingdom, on 27 July and will continue until 12 August 2012. The first event, the group stages in women’s football, began two days earlier on 25 July. Around 10,500 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) are expected to participate.

Following a bid headed by former Olympic champion Lord Coe and the then Mayor of London Ken Livingstone, London was selected as the host city on 6 July 2005 during the 117th IOC Session in Singapore, defeating bids from Moscow, New York City, Madrid and Paris.[5] London is the first city to officially host the modern Olympic Games three times,] having previously done so in 1908 and in 1948.

Construction in preparation for the Games has involved considerable redevelopment, particularly themed towards sustainability.[10] The main focus of this is a new 200-hectare Olympic Park, constructed on a former industrial site at Stratford in the east of London.The Games also make use of venues which were already in place before the bid.

Anna Threatens Jail Bharo Agiation, to Join Team on Fast

Reversing his earlier decision, Anna Hazare today said he will sit on an indefinite fast along with his team from tomorrow even as he issued an ultimatum to the government to concede to their demands in three-four days or face a fresh ‘jail bharo’ agitation.

“Anna arrives in Delhi. He says he will also be fasting,” his close aide Arvind Kejriwal tweeted this afternoon. A Team Anna spokesperson said Hazare will sit on an indefinite hunger strike along with Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai.

Earlier, Hazare had announced that he will not sit on fast owing to health problems while his three Team Anna members will go on hunger strike to demand setting up of a Special Investigation Team to probe corruption allegations levelled by them against Ministers, a fast track court to try cases against MPs and for bringing a strong Lokpal Bill.

The reversal of his decision seems to be part of a Team Anna strategy to step up pressure on the government and drum up support for the protest at Jantar Mantar, the dharna hot spot in the national capital.

Earlier in a video message, Hazare asked the government to take decisions on their demands in three-four days.

SC bans tourism in core areaes of tiger reserves

Posted on 24 July 2012 by admin

In order to conserve the big cat, the Supreme Court today directed that there shall be no tourism activity in any of the core zones of tiger reserves across the country. A Bench of Justices Swatanter Kumar and Ibrahim Kalifulla also warned of contempt proceedings and imposition of exemplary costs on states which failed to notify the buffer zones in their respective tiger reserves. The apex court was also furious that several states despite its earlier directions of April 4 and July 10, had failed to notify the buffer zones in their respective reserves. The court further warned that if they failed to comply the order within three weeks, the defaulting states shall be saddled with a cost of 50,000 rupees each, recoverable from the Principal Secretary, Forest of the state concerned.
The apex court also imposed a cost of 10,000 rupees each on Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Maharashtra and Jharkhand for not complying with its directions. The Court was hearing a PIL filed by a conservationist demanding removal of commercial tourism activities from core or critical tiger habitats in the tiger reserves.

Trouble deepens for Maruti Suzuki with HSIIDC entry

Posted on 24 July 2012 by admin

Maruti Suzuki’s woes at Manesar are piling up with the Haryana Government asking the company to pay Rs 235 crore to HSIIDC as enhanced compensation to farmers for land acquisition under a Supreme Court order.

In a notice issued on June 25, the Haryana State Industries and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) warned the company that if it did not deposit the amount within three months, the land allotted for the Manesar plant would become liable for resumption and further action would be taken.

According to HSIIDC, the notice was issued as the firm did not respond to an earlier communication in March 2012.

Earlier, the Haryana Police have acquired non-bailable arrest warrants against 12 absconding Union leaders of Maruti Suzuki, who could not be traced till now. The police also produced the five arrested people in the court yesterday and succeeded in getting six day custody of Union leader Yogesh Kumar for interrogation till July 27. He was one of the five workers arrested on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Mahapanchayat of 50 villages situated around Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar plant on Monday demanded a CBI inquiry into the incident instead of the Special Investigation Team of the state police. The economy of these villages is largely dependent on the plant.

Iran- EU meet in Istanbul on Teheran’s nuke programme

Posted on 24 July 2012 by admin

The officials from Iran and the representative of European Union on behalf of the six major world powers, meet in Istanbul today to discuss the issues related to Teheran’s controversial nuclear program. Ahead of the talks, Michael Mann, the spokesman of Catherine Marie Ashton said that the deputies of the lead negotiators for Iran and the group of six nations would try to narrow the gaps and carry the process forward. Our West Asia Correspondent reports that the Istanbul meeting between the deputies of Iran and European Union on behalf of six major world powers is an attempt to keep up the dialogue process open with Teheran after the third round of talks in Moscow failed to yield any results. The P5+1 group had called upon Iran to stop enrichment, to close down the enrichment facility in Qom and to export the uranium enriched so far. Iran in turn demanded recognition of its right to uranium enrichment and a lifting of the sanctions. The result of the Moscow talks was that both sides laid down their expectations and demands for a clear understanding of their position. In case there is a progress at the meeting it will be followed by talks at a higher level between European Union’s foreign policy chief Catherine Marie Ashton who is the lead negotiator for five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany and Iran’s top nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili. Iran has rejected demands to halt uranium enrichment, which it says is for peaceful purposes and demanded lifting of sanction . Western nations allege that Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of its nuclear program.

The Fundamental Duties of an Indian Citizen !

Posted on 01 July 2012 by admin

By the 42nd Amendment of the Constitution, adopted in 1976, Fundamental Duties of the citizens have also been enumerated. These enjoinupon a citizen among other things, to abide by the Constitution, to cherish and follow noble ideals which inspired our national struggle for freedom, to defend the country and render national service when called upon to do so and to promote harmony and spirit of common brotherhood amongst all people of India transcending religious, linguistic and regional or sectional diversities.

The Fundamental Rights of an Indian Citizen!

Posted on 01 July 2012 by admin

The Constitution offers all citizens, individually and collectively, some basic freedoms. These are guaranteed in the Constitution in the form of six broad categories of Fundamental Rights which are justiceable. Article 12 to 35 contained in Part III of the Constitution deal with Fundamental Rights.

Right to equality including equality before law, prohibition of discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth and equality of opportunity in matters of employment;

Right to freedom of speech and expression; assembly; association or union; movement; residence; and right to practice any profession or occupation (some of these rights are  subject to security of the State, friendly relations with foreign countries, public order, decency or morality);

Right against exploitation, prohibiting all forms of forced labour, child labour and traffic in human beings;

Right to freedom of conscience and free profession, practice and propagation of religion;

Right of any section of citizens to conserve their culture, language or script and right of minorities to establish and administer educational institutions of their choice; and

Right to constitutional remedies for enforcement of Fundamental Rights.

CEASED FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT  PROPERTY RIGHT

The Right to Property, which used to be one of the

Fundamental Rights under Article 31, ceases to be a Fundamental Right and has become only a legal right according to the Constitution 44th Amendment, 1978. It is, however, ensured that the removal of the Property Right from the list of Fundamental Rights would not affect the right of the minorities to establish and administer educational institutions of their choice. Besides, a provision has been made, as before, that no person will be deprived of his property except in accordance with law.

RIGHT TO EQUALITY

Equality before the law is one of the most important fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution. Article 14 states that the State shall not deny to any person equality before the law or the equal protection of laws within Indian territory. Article 15 prohibits discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth. No citizen can, on any of these grounds, be subjected to any disability or restriction with regard to access to shops, public restaurants, hotels and places of public entertainment or the use of wells, tanks, bathing ghats, roads and places of public resort maintained out of State funds. Article 16 guarantees equality of opportunity in matters of public appointment.
