India Wins Non-Permanent Seat On UNSC

After years of intense diplomatic canvassing, United Nations Security Council (UNSC) today elected India to be one of five new regional non-permanent representatives to the Security Council, the UN’s most powerful organization. It will assume its position on January 1, 2011. India got 187 votes in the 192-member UN General Assembly, which met on Tuesday.

India last held a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council in 1992. In 1996 it lost to Japan by 100 voters.

This time however India was standing unopposed for the Asia seat after the only other contestant in this category, Kazakhstan, withdrew from the race in December last year.

India took over from Japan for the Asian region while four others Germany for Western Europe, Colombia took Mexico’s seat for Latin America and South Africa took the place of Uganda for Africa.
