Govt to issue Presidential reference to SC on cancellation of 122 2G licenses

The government has decided to issue a Presidential reference to the Supreme Court on the apex court’s order cancelling 122 2G telecom licences.Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters after the Cabinet meeting yesterday that the proposal for Presidential reference has been cleared.

No evidence against Modi in Gulbarga society carnage: SIT

Special Investigation Team, SIT has found no evidence against the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and 61 others accused in the Gulbarga society carnage case in Ahmedabad in 2002. An Ahmedabad Magisterial Court after pursuing the voluminous SIT report yesterday, observed that there is no evidence to establish the offences alleged by Zakia Jafri against the accused.

Allahabad HC bans reporting on troop movement


The Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court has directed the Centre and Uttar Pradesh government to ensure that there is no reporting on movement of troops by print or electronic media. Acting on a PIL, a bench comprising justices Uma Nath Singh and Virendra Kumar Dixit said that the issue of movement of army troops is not a matter which should require public discussion at the cost of defence secrecy and the security of the country.

The Prime Minister today said that mapping of the aquifers in the country will be initiated in the 12th five year plan to obtain basic information on ground water availability.Aquifers are continuous underground water resources.

18 killed in suicide attacks in Afghanistan


In Afghanistan, 18 persons were killed and 27 injured in western and southern parts of the country in two separate suicide attacks yesterday. The first incident took place outside the district headquarters building in the Guzara district of western Herat province as two suicide bombers rammed their explosive laden vehicle into the compound.

The government today announced new Foreign Direct Investment, FDI norms for Foreign Institutional Investors, FIIs.Under the new norms, FIIs can now invest up to 23 per cent in commodity exchanges without seeking prior approval of the government.
