The Global Peace Index

What is Global Peace Index?

The Global Peace Index (GPI) is an attempt of the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) to measure the relative position of nations’ and regions’ peacefulness. The Institute for Economics and Peace develops this index in consultation with an international panel of peace experts from peace institutes and think tanks with data collected and collated by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

About the IEP

The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) is a global non-profit research organization headquartered in Sydney, Australia with a branch in Washington, D.C. The core asset of this institution is the Global Peace Index (GPI), which is now considered the benchmark study in measuring peace.

In which year GPI was first launched?
The Global Peace Index was first launched by IEP in May 2007. This is the first study which ranks the countries around the world as per their peacefulness. While 121 countries were ranked in 2007, the latest ranking includes 149 countries.
